The Southwest Pipeline provides a clean and safe water supply for residents of the southwestern portion of the state. Without access to the Southwest Pipeline, many residents of this region might otherwise have to carry drinking water from elsewhere. As recently as 1991, residents in a number of the cities now receiving water from the pipeline, were drinking water declared unsafe by the Environmental Protection Agency. Once complete, the Southwest Pipeline will bring fresh, clean water as far west as Beach, south to Hettinger and to Carson and Hebron in the east.
