Red River Basin Coordinator

The RRJWRD has always been aware that it is critical to devise and implement a workable plan to comprehensively manage the water resources of the Red River Basin - with an emphasis on planning efforts to reducing flood damages. Success in developing and implementing any comprehensive and workable plan requires that the various political subdivisions in the Red River Basin (townships, cities, counties, and water resource districts) and other interested groups (such as the Red River Basin Commission and IJC) understand the various options that are available toward this effort, are aware of the steps that have already been taken, and work together on common strategies.

To accomplish this, the RRJWRD has directed a Red River Basin Coordinator to implement an information program associated with these efforts. Specifically, the Coordinator will do the following as part of the 2004 work plan:

  • Continue to develop a basin-wide water management plan, which includes all aspects of flood damage reduction and floodplain management.
  • Continue to research water plans and policies that are already in place in the Red River Basin.
  • Contact water resource districts, counties, cities, and townships; and schedule meetings to discuss their concerns and projects, and how the RRJWRD can help.
  • Respond to inquiries concerning flooding in the North Dakota portion of the Red River Basin.
  • Respond to requests from member counties as well as other basin organizations to coordinate efforts in floodplain management and flood damage reduction.
  • Continue to work with all statewide groups in water development and management that benefit the citizens of North Dakota.
  • Schedule presentations of Maple River Dam, Devils Lake, Biota Transfer, Red River Basin Planning, and other RRJWRD activities.
  • Attend meetings and participate in other activities that the RRJWRD's Executive Committee considers important as part of the Coordinator's duties.
